Description Delicate yet sturdy upright stems top the bushy mound of deeply-cut green foliage, supporting large, white upward-facing flowers with a mix of deep blue, light blue, pink, red, and yellow spurs. Requires less of a winter chill than other varieties and will bloom earlier in the season. Excellent for mixed borders and rock gardens. An herbaceous perennial.
Bloom Time Early Spring to Early Summer
Deciduous/Evergreen Herbaceous
Special Features Easy Care
Growth Rate Moderate
Flower Attributes Flowers for Cutting, Long Bloom Season, Showy Flowers
Landscape Use Border, Container, Hanging Basket
Flower Color Multicolored
Foliage Color Green
Companion Plants Coral Bells (Heuchera); Anemone (Anemone); Hosta (Hosta); Astilbe (Astilbe); Bleeding Heart (Bleeding Heart)
Care Instructions Thrives in enriched, lightly moist garden soils, with morning sun and afternoon shade; more shade at lower elevations. Water deeply, regularly in first growing season to develop root system; once established reduce frequency. Clip spent blooms to prolong flowering. Apply slow-release fertilizer in spring. Hard prune at end of growing season.
History A breakthrough in breeding from Syngenta, the Kirigami™ series of Aquilegia can be "programmed" for bloom, based on warming temperatures, resulting in early spring blooms that continue to provide color with a wider flowering range compared to other varieties. The ability to force the bloom is a great asset for cut flower arrangements and special occasions, and the tolerance for warmer temperatures (fewer chill hours) benefits gardeners in warmer climates where other varieties of Aquilegia may not perform as well as they might in cooler northern regions.
