Description Dan Hinkley selected this Chilean evergreen shrub or small tree for its excellent, more refined form and handsome silvery white reverse to the foliage. Bold and glossy green leaves are clad to upright stems. Large clusters of white flowers provide a fantastic show in late winter. A distinctive specimen or informal hedge.
Bloom Time Winter, followed by small ornamental fruit.
Deciduous/Evergreen Evergreen
Special Features Easy Care
Growth Rate Moderate
Flower Attributes Fragrant, Showy Flowers
Landscape Use Hedge, Privacy Screen
Design Ideas Plant on a gentle slope to show off the beautiful silvery undersides of the leaves as they flutter in the slightest breeze. A magnificent, refined shrub or small tree is stunning when featured along with shrubs and trees with deeper green foliage. Most attractive in its natural form, making it well suited as a specimen, massing on hillsides, or as an informal, unclipped screen or hedge.
Flower Color White
Foliage Color Green
Companion Plants Japanese Maple (Acer); Heavenly Bamboo (Nandina); Sweetspire (Itea); Boxwood (Buxus); Smoke Tree (Cotinus);
Care Instructions Prefers humus rich, well-drained soils, but highly adaptable. Water deeply, regularly during the first few growing seasons to develop an extensive root system; reduce frequency, once established. Prune lightly as needed to shape after flowering.
History Described as more tight and columnar in form than the species, this selection hails from the southern part of the Andes mountains in South America. Tree of the year at 2010 Farwest Show.
Lore The very first export from South America as an excellent source of ascorbic acid, considered to be the first cure for scurvy.
