Design Ideas The highly textured bamboo-like appearance of this smaller shrub makes it a natural choice for Asian-inspired gardens or contemporary rock and gravel gardens. Because it thrives in lightly shaded, woodland settings, it blends wonderfully with the colorful leaves of Japanese Maples, Purple Nine Bark and similar shrubs and trees with deep coloration. Highly effective in larger spaces planted in bold, informal groupings where the swaths of glowing foliage is stunning.
Flower Color White
Foliage Color Multicolored
Companion Plants Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum); Viburnum (Viburnum); Foxglove (Digitalis); Barberry (Berberis); Bergenia (Bergenia)
Care Instructions Provide well-drained, enriched soil. Shelter from harsh afternoon sun. Water deeply, regularly during the first growing season to establish an extensive root system; once established, reduce frequency. Apply a balanced fertilizer in spring. Prune annually and remove root suckers to control size and spread.
History The species Sorbaria sorbifolia, commonly called Ural False Spirea, is native to the mountain ranges of eastern Siberia, Manchuria, northern China, Korea, and Japan
