Deeply lobed, palmate, toothy leaves with silvery white speckles add bold texture and contrast to any lightly shaded setting. An extraordinary specimen for containers, a large terrarium, or as a houseplant.
Bloom Time Late spring to early fall.
Deciduous/Evergreen Herbaceous
Special Features Dramatic Foliage Color, Easy Care
Problems/Solutions Rabbit Resistant
Growth Rate Moderate
Flower Attributes Showy Flowers
Landscape Use Border, Container
Design Ideas This makes a really exotic specimen plant. Use for color and texture, tucked between ferns in a lightly shaded border or tree understory. It does very well in the sheltered humidity of a large terrarium or vivarium.
Flower Color Pink
Foliage Color Variegated
Companion Plants Ligularia (Ligularia); Rhododendron (Rhododendron); Fern (Arachniodes); Anemone (Anemone); False Ginseng (Metapanax delavayi)
Care Instructions Provide enriched, well-drained soil. Best with some humidity; avoid extreme heat and harsh sun exposures. Water regularly, allowing soil to dry just slightly between watering. Move container plants indoors when temperatures reach 45 degrees to overwinter as a houseplant. In landscape plantings, potentially hardy to zone 7b with winter protection.
History Begonia circumlobata is a hardy, rhizomatous begonia species that is native to the mountains of China and northern Vietnam, found at elevations above 4,000 ft. The species is quite variable in the wild; this especially attractive form was collected by Dan Hinkley's fellow explorer Shayne Chandler, in the mountains of the Guangxi Province of southern China, where it was found growing in shaded woodland at an elevation of 5,000 ft.
