A graceful, colorful groundcover for shaded borders and container gardens. Slender stems holding bright yellow leaves with thin green stripes create a tiny bamboo-like effect. Foliage becomes pink-tinged as the weather cools in autumn. Naturalizes well; clumps spread gently. 2009 Perennial Plant of the Year. An herbaceous perennial.
Bloom Time
Inconspicuous; prized for foliage.
Deciduous/Evergreen
Herbaceous
Special Features
Dramatic Foliage Color, Easy Care, Improved Pest and Disease Resistance
Problems/Solutions
Deer Resistant, Tolerates Urban Pollution, Black Walnut Tolerant
Growth Rate
Slow
Landscape Use
Border, Container, Ground Cover, Edging
Design Ideas
This vigorous broad-leafed grass behaves a lot like a dwarf Bamboo without the spreading problem. It's a ray of sunshine in shaded or dark-colored gardens. The golden grass-like leaves will brighten partly-shaded or dark-colored gardens. A great accent beside water gardens or at the base of arbor posts. An excellent Asian-garden plant.
Thrives in cool summer climates with humus-rich, evenly moist, well-drained soil. Mulch to conserve moisture and keep roots cool in summer, and to protect root zone in cold winter areas. Best foliage color in brighter exposures, but needs protection from harsh sun in hot summer regions. Prune old foliage before new leaves emerge in spring.
History
