History | The PJM group of rhododendrons are the result of a hybridization program that began North America in the 1930's by Massachusetts nurserymen Peter J. Mezitt and son, Edmund Mezitt. These hybrids resulted from crosses between Rhododendron carolinianum and Rhododendron dauricum var. sempervirens, and are noted as having exceptional winter hardiness. The PJM rhododendrons are characteristically vigorous yet compact, and evergreen with small, elliptical leaves that are glossy dark green, turning reddish purple in autumn. |
Lore | The P.J.M. rhododendron and some cultivar names of this group are derived from the initials of renown hybridizer Peter J. Mezitt. |
