SunBelievable®: A Sunflower for the 21st Century

SunBelievable®: A Sunflower for the 21st Century

Okay, picture the happy face of a sunny sunflower popping up in the mid-to-late season garden. Got it? Now, imagine 1,000 of those brilliant-yellow flowers blooming non-stop on a single plant from spring to first frost. Gimme!

That’s SunBelievable® Brown Eyed Girl Helianthus, a brand new groundbreaking variety we’re introducing this spring. Developed by plant breeders in the UK, with all kinds of cool attributes (see below). SunBelievable® piles on the prairie charm, but is just as easy to grow as any other annual. If you LOVE sunflowers but wish they could bloom all summer long, it's time to get this innovative new variety. Let’s dig in!

YES, IT REALLY IS DIFFERENT!

Sunflowers are typically grown from seeds and produce a tall stalk topped by a few large flowers. They can also be shorter with several smaller blooms. SunBelievable® is different. It's a brand new hybrid with a multi-branching, short and compact habit. Since it doesn't produce seeds, it can put all of its energy into making a constant crop of flowers.

Trials in both the UK and in the US have demonstrated the plant's ability. Given appropriate water and fertilizer, it will pump out 1,000 blooms over the course of the growing season. And, the foliage of other types of sunflowers can get beat up as the season goes on. However, this plant's luxurious foliage actually deepens in color with age, so it looks better, longer.

SunBelievable® Brown Eyed Girl Helianthus has already won several significant international awards. Here’s what makes it so special (and a must-have in your spring/summer/fall garden):

• Produces over 1,000 flowers on each plant during the growing season!
• Flowers continuously from spring until the first frost.
• Day length neutral so it blooms even on shorter, less bright days.
• Sterile so it puts all its energy into flowering.
• No pollen, but still attractive to bees.
• Heat tolerant – great in pots and full sun, hot, sunny borders.
• Shrubby and compact to 24” tall and 39” wide.

Like you, we treasure the sequence of bloom in the garden. This comes from plants that flower at different times through out the season. But, we also love the idea of plant that we can sink into a pot or into the ground. We depend on it to provide the unique delight of sunflowers for a longer period of time. Keeping pollinators happy is also big in our world. SunBelievable™ Brown Eyed Girl Helianthus is rich with the high-calorie nectar they need. Expect to see plenty of snacking going on.

SunBelievable® Brown Eyed Girl Helianthus will be available online at shop.monrovia.com and at garden centers nationwide beginning in April. We’d love to hear your thoughts on how you will use this great new plant. Comment below!

OK! You did it again! Another flower for my Winter damaged garden! I am looking for an annual plant for my backyard that is beneficial to native bees and other pollinators and here it is! The Heleanthis Sunbelievable, I think it will be perfect for a very sunny spot and add so much happy color to my garden. Thank you!! The sad part is I have to wait until more danger of frost has past, I live at a high altitude.

Since plant has no pollen, why are bees still attracted to it? Does it produce nectar? Are Honeybees drawn to it?

This plant is a flowering power house but unfortunately it is no friend of pollinators. I have watched bees attempt to extract anything of value from the flowers (it has no pollen as you mention but apparently no nectar either) and after a few seconds of frustration they move on. As gardeners, we love the fact that plants are easy care and self-cleaning and all those features that make them bloom all summer without having to be deadheaded but we forget that those qualities don't help the pollinators. I guess we can't have it both ways.

My plant two Helianthus annuus started to go black sometime around mid-season (July). It was a dry season, but we watered daily. The plants are in a flowerbed on a slope where they get plenty of sunshine. Half of one plant has come back with blooms, but the other half is stunted. The second plant has a couple blooms only and looks awful. I live in the south-western corner of New Hampshire.

It's September here in the very warm Sacramento Valley, California. I bought the brown eyed girl a couple of months ago, but then found it might be too warm to plant it. The air temperatures have dropped to the high 80's. My soil measuring device does not include soil temperature. Can you advise when I plant from the pot?

Is there any way to get on a list to be notified when these are available? I don't even see a way to add these on that wish list in the drop down menu on this Monrovia website. Thanks for any help. If it helps I live in Florida and I will drive to get it. Thanks.

I have purchased 2 of the Sun believable Brown eyed girl sunflower plants. One seems to be blooming just as pictured. The other however the blooms have no center brown disk. There are only flower petals. Does the plant need certain conditions to have the brown center portion of the flower? With no centers these will not provide any nectar for pollinators.

We stumbled across this beauty last season and absolutely fell in love! The 1000 blooms in no exaggeration - deadhead regularly and it just keeps blooming. This season we will add supports to the inside structure when it gets big - last year it split itself in two from the weight of the branches. No negative impact, surprisingly, but I don't want to risk it. I loved the big mounding look of this plant!

I grew it last year in a pot and it was perfect!! I love this plant???? the pot was a a foot and a half deep and a foot across so the plant grew down to the ground and spread out 2-3 feet away from the pot. It would have grown bigger if I lived where the summer is longer. I wasn’t able to find a plant anywhere this year???? is there anyway to request some to be stocked in a nursery in Flagstaff AZ? When I asked the same nursery I bought it from last year they didn’t remember having Ike even what it was. Hope you can help me find one for next year!!

We love this plant and it did very well in our garden last year. This year we looked for it at several of your listed retailers including the Lowe's location we bought it from last year and never found it. We live in the Chicago area. Have you taken it off the market in our area? If not, where can we find it? Thanks.
